We chose Brain Tumour Research as our charity of the year for 2024. Brain tumours are an urgently underfunded disease, one which our Business Manager, Hannah Bateman, has experienced personally when her father, Gavin, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in December 2022, sadly passing away in May of 2023. As you can imagine, fundraising for the charity that has helped Hannah and her family endlessly through this ordeal is very close to our hearts.

Faith is fast heading towards her 10-year anniversary at Sewell Wallis. As she crosses her nine-year mark, we asked her to reflect on this significant milestone, tell us why she’s stayed with the business so long, discuss the ups and downs, and ponder on what else she wants to accomplish during her time here.

Anyone who manages people has been there: a valuable employee is resigning, the panic is setting in, what do you do? You counter offer them to convince them to stay. This might seem like a logical solution to get the potential leaver to stick around, and avoid the costs associated with hiring their replacement, but counter offers can, more often than not, lead to unintended consequences that can cause long-term damage to your business.

As your time at university draws to an end, what are your career plans? We talk you through the various options on offer, and how to best utilise the support of a good recruiter.

Inci joined our Sheffield transactional and part-qualified finance team at the start of April. She talks about her first month with the business, how she’s found changing industries after six years in the same one, and how she wants to leave her mark on the Sheffield finance market.

On 27th April, Suli and I attempted the Leeds to Liverpool cycle, a 126 mile ride covering the whole canal length, with beautiful scenery. We took on this challenge to raise money for Brain Tumour Research, Sewell Wallis’ charity partner of the year. This is a cause close to our hearts, as our colleague, Hannah Bateman, lost her dad to a brain tumour in 2023. We were determined to raise a ton of money and tackle this huge challenge head-on; neither of us are cyclists and we hadn’t done any training, so it would be an absolute slog. The first 27 miles from Leeds to Skipton were pretty tough as our bodies got used to it, but nothing compared to what was to come! The paths were flat, level and straight; overall it was actually a really nice ride. It was, however, absolutely freezing as it was only 9:20 am by the time we got to our first stop.
